Paine (Torres del Paine) National Park is a national park encompassing mountain, glacier, lake, and river-rich areas in the southern Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes. The park is located 112 km (70 mi) north of Puerto Natales and 312 km (194 mi) north of Punta Arenas. The park abounds with a rich flora and fauna. The park contains four vegetation zones: Patagonian steppe, Pre-Andean shrubland, Magellanic deciduous forest and Andean Desert. Guanacos, in the same family as llamas, are one of the most common mammals found in the park. Other mammals include cougars and foxes. It is also home to the endangered Chilean Huemul. The park contains breeding populations of 15 species of birds of prey, and there are two others that are likely reproducing here.
