One
of the worlds wonders, the Amazon has fascinated travelers and
dreamers since its discovery in 1542 by Francisco de Orellana. It
is 3,900 miles long, carries 365 times as much water as the Mississippi
and is over seven miles wide at Manaus, a point located 1,000 miles
from the Atlantic. The basin, drained by the river and its more than
1,000 tributaries, is the last great wooded wilderness of its kind.
It contains over half the worlds species of birds and thousands
of species of mammals and plants. Transportation in this enormous
region is mainly on rivers, streams, canals and oxbow lakes, which
crisscross the surface. River people and tribes of Indians deep in
the jungle constitute this region's sparse population. However, the
push of industrialization and the ecological damage it inherently
causes continue to threaten this delicate ecosystem.
|
On the outskirts of Manaus sits the Tropical
Hotel, a magnificent property that blends comfort and elegance
with the river and surrounding jungle in a manner that leaves
both undisturbed. You will have a half-day tour of Manus, including
the famous Amazonas Theater and the colorful port and waterfront
area.

Located in
the heart of the Amazon jungle, but not far from Manaus, the Amazon
Ecopark unites adventure and comfort. It has 60 rooms distributed among
20 bungalows throughout the forest, together with a thatched-roof, open-air
restaurant, a private beach, natural swimming pools, and over 10 km.
of jungle trails and unusual native fauna and flora. It is the only
lodge authorized by the Brazilian Environmental Agency to maintain wild
animals.
The
lodge is arranged in 20 separate bungalows, or units, and each unit
has three rooms with independent entrances and bathrooms, hot showers,
air-conditioning, and screened windows. They are rustic yet charming
in their decor, and provide all of your basic comfort and safety in
the jungle.
Excursions
include: jungle hikes; a visit to Monkey Forest; alligator observation
safari in the evening; a visit to a local native's house with the opportunity
to learn about how rubber is processed; canoe trips; prianha fishing;
a tour to the Meeting of the Waters (where the Negro and Solimoes Rivers
meet to form the Amazon River); and instruction about jungle survival
and medicinal plants.

Come explore
the Amazon by taking a boat safari into the Anavilhanas Archipelago,
to the unique ecosystems of the Rio Negro. This
great tributary of the Amazon River flows north of Manaus and is characterized
by its dark, acidic water, where few insects can breed. This leaves
the environment almost mosquito-free! It also accounts for flora that
differs from the rest of the jungle areas around Manaus.
 The
safari boats feature air-conditioned cabins with private bathrooms,
plenty of hot water, good food, cold drinks and expert naturalist guides.
For those
who wish the comfort of a luxury ship, Amazon Clipper Cruises now presents
the new M/V Amazon Clipper Premium,
a vessel unique in style that offers "simply the best" small-ship
cruising in the Amazon. Large enough to offer spacious cabins with lower
beds and inviting public spaces, but small enough to dock at remote
spots and cruise to hidden locations due to the shallow draft of only
three feet, the M/V Amazon Clipper
Premium is the perfect size for a comfortable cruise on the
Amazon rivers. Amazon Clipper Cruises now puts at your disposal its
complete support infrastructure to offer an on-board
experience that's second to none - and in addition we will take you
to places few other cruise passengers ever see. It's possible because
our cruise groups are small and personal, and our knowledge of the destination
is complete.
At 32 meters
(106 feet) long, with a beam of 9 meters (30 feet), the M/V
Amazon Clipper Premium hosts only 32 guests in 16 spacious
all-outside cabins, with lower beds, private bathroom facilities with
hot shower, individual air-conditioning and safety box. There are 11
cabins with two lower twin beds, and four cabins with one queen bed
plans and cabin floor plans).
Unique on
the M/V Amazon Clipper Premium
is a spacious observation and sun
deck with a fantastic 360° panoramic view (above, right). The window-lined
dining room seats all passengers leisurely at one single seating. Excellent
meals, up to international standards, are prepared with utmost care
by an experienced kitchen staff. Meals are served buffet-style, and
you can help yourself from a great variety of fresh foods including
daily specials or choice vegetarian meals. The boat's kitchen is fully-equipped
with freezers, charcoal filters and a plentiful supply of mineral water.
You
will experience trips via outboard powered canoes into the smaller creeks
to see life on the flooded plains. Excursions include rubber trees,
lakes with giant Victoria Regia water lilies, bird-watching, visits
to local inhabitants and walks in the forest, always accompanied by
expedition guides.
The M/V
Amazon Clipper (above, left) accommodates
16 passengers in eight air-conditioned, twin-berthed cabins with private
bathrooms. The M/V Selly Clipper
(below, right) accommodates eight
passengers in four air-conditioned, twin-berthed cabins with private
bathrooms. The M/V Selly Clipper
II accommodates 20 passengers in
ten air-conditioned, twin-berthed cabins with private bathrooms.
Social
life on board the boats is divided between the converted saloon and
bar areas, the dining areas, libraries and the panoramic sun decks.
The boats' kitchens are fully equipped with freezers, charcoal filters
and a large supply of mineral water and beverages.
Itineraries
3 DAYS: Monday-Wednesday
4 DAYS: Wednesday-Saturday
6 DAYS: Monday-Saturday
Day
1, Mon: 2:30 PM embark at the Tropical
Hotel Pier for a 3-Day or 6-Day safari. Navigate the Xiborena and Careiro
regions to Curari and explore smaller creeks via canoe to see life on
the flood plains: jute, market garden produce, rubber trees, flood plain
forest and giant water lilies on the lakes. Return to the forest after
dinner to observe night life, including caimans. Navigate up the Amazon
(the upper part of it is called Rio Solimoes by the natives) to Lake
Janauaca. Dinner and overnight on board. (D)
Day
2, Tue: Take an early morning canoe
and bird-watching trip. There are good chances of seeing Hoatzins and
large flocks of egrets and cormorants. Breakfast on board, then visit
the inhabitants of the lake. Walk in the forest with commentaries by
the specialist guide. Lunch on board, and then fish for piranhas or
other species. After dinner, you take a trip to see nocturnal animals,
including night hawks, snakes, toro-rats, sloths and frogs. Travel downstream
on the Amazon. (B, L, D)
Day
3, Wed: Early in the morning, go bird-watching
in the January Ecological Park or nearby waterways. After
breakfast, travel out past Manaus port
to the Tropical Hotel pier, where you
will have views of the floating docks, market and houses on stilts.
Arrive at 11:30 AM.
The three-day safari ends here with a farewell to some new friends.
The six-day safari continues and the four-day safari commences with
a 2:30 PM departure from the pier at the Tropical Hotel. Now, you will
navigate the Ariau River and visit shore before dinner. After dark,
you will return by canoe on the river, where you can observe nocturnal
animals. Then, the Clipper begins navigation of Acu Creek. (B, L, D)
Day 4, Thu:
Early in the morning, go bird-watching in nearby waterways. In the afternoon
travel upstream to the Pagodao River (tributary of the Rio Negro) for
a short canoe trip. Set out before sunset, and return after dark. You
will have the chance to observe nocturnal animals and changes in the
forest as night falls. (B, L, D)
Day
5, Fri: Travel by boat to Praia Grande
(a white sand beach), swim if conditions permit and observe the vegetation.
Then take a canoe trip to Lake Acajatuba and adjacent areas to see their
typical flora (rubber trees, Brazil nut trees and useful palm trees
of various types). Lunch on board, then stop at the Paricatuba community
to see old abandoned rubber-boom buildings now overgrown with strangler
figs. Dinner and navigation. (B, L, D)
Day 6, Sat:
Go bird-watching before breakfast, then travel by boat to the Meeting
of the Waters (right). Here the muddy water of the Amazon River and
the black water of the Rio Negro run together in bi-colored swirls and
eddies for miles before mixing. Return to the Tropical Hotel pier with
fine views of the Manaus waterfront en route, and arrive at 11:30 AM.

Deep in
the heart of Brazil lies one of the worlds great wildlife reserves,
the Pantanal, which can now be seen by a handful of tourists wanting
to view nature at her best. Sustained by the floodwaters of the Parana
River, this wild and rugged savannah teems with bird and animal wildlife.
Visitors can view the wildlife by 4-wheel drive, in canoe or on horseback,
while staying in delightful accommodations.
The fauna
seen in the Pantanal varies by the seasonal rain and flooding. The wildlife
follows the water cycle, so the animals you see will depend upon the
season, the animal's cycle and luck! Many of the birds are endemic,
but many others are migratory. The dry season typically starts in June
and continues through September or even into October. This enormous
savanna is in a constant state of flux: each visit rewards the visitor
with an ecological adventure beyond description!
Fly
into Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul State. You can choose to stay
at a deluxe ecological lodge or at a comfortable outpost deeper in the
Pantanal wilderness. The lodge dates from colonial times and offers
amenities such as a pool and air-conditioning. The Pousada Caiman (left)
outpost lodges offer the more adventurous a closer proximity to the
Pantanal's heartbeat.
At Pousada Baiazinha (below, right) and Pousada Cordilheira,
guests share the company of a maximum of eleven other lodgers in a total
of six rooms with private bathrooms. These lodges are more rustic than
Pousada Caiman, but all have air-conditioning, ample, beautifully appointed
living rooms and swimming pools. Pousada Cordilheira (13 km from Caiman)
and Baiazinha (9 km away) also have observation towers.
