Chichicastenango
is noted for its open-air market on Thursdays and Sundays, where colorful
native handicrafts of the region are traded. This is also the site of
400-year-old Santo Tomas Church, where to this day Catholic and Pagan
rites are blended. Lake Atitlan is a mile-high spectacularly beautiful
lake set among volcano peaks and surrounded by 12 Indian villages named
after the 12 apostles.

Tikal
Approximately
190 miles north of Guatemala City, in a jungle-choked region called
the Peten, lie the astonishing ruins of Tikal, principal city of the
Maya people. The Maya civilization extended from what is today Yucatan,
Mexico throughout Guatemala, and thrived from 600 B.C. to about 900
A.D. At its height, Tikal had over three thousand stone structures
and supported over one million inhabitants within the city and its
surrounding area, and is the most grandiose of all pre-Columbian Mayan
ruins.

The elusive
Quetzal
|
2 Days/1 Night
Day 1: SAT
5:00 AM departure from Guatemala
City. Drive east and then north into
the cloud forest of Alta Verapaz.
Breakfast stop at the Quetzal
Reserve with time to walk the trails
in search of the elusive Quetzal. Then continue to Coban,
the capital of the province, visiting an orchid
farm en route, featuring over 700
varieties. After lunch in Coban continue
the drive through the glorious countryside of coffee,
cocoa and cardamom plantations, arriving
in the late afternoon at the Caves
of Lanquin, in time to watch the
thousands upon thousands of bats at sunset. Overnight at the charming
ecolodge of El Recreo.

Early morning descend to the tropical lowlands to the limestone
pools of Semuc Champey. The raging

Arrive Belize City and transfer to Cayo District Afternoon
